You are warmly invited to the ‘School, Art and Democracy’ symposium at the Jugendkunstschule Stralsund on 11 September 2026 from 10 am to 4 pm! This event brings together artists, teachers and key figures in cultural and political education to discuss issues relating to democracy.
As part of the conference, I will be running a workshop entitled ‘In Resonance for a Sustainable Democracy’, in which I invite participants to become more aware of our own potential for democratic coexistence. Through playful methods, we can really put our ability to see things from different perspectives and our imagination to the acid test. Once we know what hidden resources we have at our disposal to support others, practising democracy is easier than we might think.
Alongside my contribution, this day’s programme will feature further insights, discussions and workshops. How can artistic practice in schools sharpen awareness, enable participation and make democratic action tangible? Examples will be presented that show how art opens up spaces in which young people can develop their own positions, tolerate contradictions and engage with other perspectives.
For a good twenty years, art projects in schools have been funded by the Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Kultur, Bundes- und Europaangelegenheiten des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as part of the ‘Culture Against Violence’ initiative, under the patronage of Minister Bettina Martin. As part of this state-wide project, the Kulturwerk of the BBK M-V e.V. arranges for artists to visit schools to enrich the everyday school life of children and young people with fresh inspiration, ideas, and unusual questions, as well as through work on unconventional formats.
