An artistic-scientific work thematises the transformation of the marine habitat

  • Post category:art / project

When art and science come together, positions meet that have numerous interfaces in common. I notice this time and again when Marie-Katherin Zühlke (microbiologist), Susanne Gabler (artist) and I meet to work on our joint project on the subject of ‘Marine Habitat’. Interfaces can be found not only in the direction of our interests, but also in certain ways of seeing and working. Although we often use different means and methods, they can complement each other perfectly.

As part of our cooperation, we deal with the changing marine habitat, we want to sensitise people to the current situation of the waters and provide impetus for a more conscious approach. We are planning an interdisciplinary work to focus on the incipient change. It is intended to make its complexity tangible on various levels. However, we are also interested in the relationships that already exist between art and science. We want to utilise these and make them tangible with our contribution, which will be presented to the public. Our project refers to two places where Marie-Katherin Zühlke works: the University of Greifswald and the Station biologique de Roscoff in France. There will therefore be a presentation at both locations.

We have already been able to realise initial experiments that examine interpersonal encounters on a non-verbal level. We used dance to try out different ways of appreciative and open-ended communication. How does this fit in with the theme? If we manage to treat ourselves with respect, we can usually do the same with those around us. We have therefore focussed on our own responsibility and expanded our idea of perception, getting to know each other and cooperation.

But we don’t want to stop there. Further experimental steps are being planned. We are also concerned with the usability of algae, plastic waste and the consequences of change. We are looking forward to the development of our collaboration and how our different working methods will come together.

The featured image is a detail of a watercolour sketch I made inspired by my visit to the Station biologique de Roscoff in 2022. The video still below is from one of our recent dance experiments.

Our project is supported by a network behind the mentoringKUNST programme of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – a professionalisation programme for female artists and authors run by the Berufsverband Bildender Künstlerinnen und Künstler Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. (Professional Association of Visual Artists Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). Continuing cross-mentoring programmes are offered here for alumnae, within the framework of which cooperation between players from different fields is promoted. mentoringKUNST is part of the state-wide mentoring network in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is supported by the Mentoring MV specialist unit.
