REVIEW: Installation in the CUBIC for the project Zeitsprünge

The installation REVIEW has been presented at CUBIC on Karl-Marx-Platz in Greifswald since 11 December 2024. Artists from the art association art-cube – Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst e.V. used various materials that had already been used for this year’s ZEITSPRÜNGE art project. Now, however, the various objects, the video stills in slide format and several labelled transparencies can be seen in a new arrangement, allowing a further perspective on the art project to be perceived.

The video collage ZEITSPRÜNGE was presented back in the summer. It was developed for the anniversary year of Caspar David Friedrich and then projected onto the facades of buildings in Greifswald’s city centre. The installation REVIEW at the end of the year not only marks the end of the anniversary, but also the end of the exhibition year at CUBIC.

The various presentations of ZEITSPRÜNGE are the result of an artistic investigation using contemporary means, which asks to what extent the Romantic plays a role today. Friedrich’s well-known motifs and themes have been transferred more or less radically into contemporary art formats. In the process, various works of art were created, which were repeatedly recombined in fragments.
The top photo shows a labelled film referring to the motif ‘Two men contemplating the moon’. At the bottom, in the installation view, used objects such as the white chair and the cherries made of fabric appear, which were used several times for artistic actions in the video collage.
80 images run through the mechanical slide projector, which switches on automatically as soon as it gets dark outside. The video stills, the result of a further transfer, in this case from digital back to analogue, provide a comprehensive insight into the various approaches of the artistic positions involved in the project. The presentation can be viewed daily into the new year during a leisurely evening stroll through the city centre!

In addition to myself, the participating artists are Karen Kunkel, Marcus Schramm, Pauline Stopp and Iris Vitzthum.

Further information on the earlier parts of the project, i.e. the video projection in public space and the performance day, can be found on the art-cube website. A publication on the various artistic contributions to the performance day is currently being prepared. We can therefore look forward to another small highlight from the ZEITSPRÜNGE project in the new year.
