The figure

The portrait has always concerned me. We not only read in facial expression, gestures and posture of humans, we also recognize ourselves in it. The diversity of individual physical expression is as enormous as humanity itself, and yet we find familiar characteristics of other persons within ourselves. I use effigies as an interface to come into contact with the beholder.

Minis

Small formats invite to come closer and look at the picture from just a few centimeters away. Thereby something like a private space between the beholder and the painting can form in which the perception can newly adjust.

Instead of developing paintings by abstraction of a landscape or a figure, I experiment with colours and shapes by following inner impulses and allowing spontaneous actions without wanting to image something specific.

Elementary

To approach to a painting without a certain notion I find very suspenseful. While working I try to let go fixed picture concepts and playing instead with shapes, colours and structures. Thereby I like to try out different materials and working technics.

Transmission

The works presented here reflect an exploration of different levels of painting which are created by layering colour surfaces and structures. In some pictures, the painting ground consists of acrylic glass which has been painted on both sides. This expands the pictorial space with additional layers that seem to float on top of each other and shift depending on the viewers perspective.

In my publication to the paintings the text Tiefes Licht (Deep Light) from Marcus Schramm was published.

Le Fou et la Vénus

In 2009, I developed a series of drawings based on Charles Baudelaire’s prose for the poem ‘Le Fou et la Vénus’, which thematises the superiority of the adored woman as Venus over the powerless, languishing man as a fool. In order to make the dynamics of gender roles tangible, I designed a wall in the women’s toilet of the exhibition venue with a stylised image of a fool – so that the ladies can make the fools dance when they go to the toilet.

The mural also refers to other murals in the commercial building at Güstrow Castle.
